Physical assault

During the 2017–18 reference period, an estimated 2.2% of persons in New South Wales (138,500) experienced at least one incident of physical assault. Of these:

  • just over half (55% or 76,500) had their most recent incident reported to police
  • around three in five (62% or 82,700) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident
  • just under half (46% or 64,100) experienced a single incident and one-third (33% or 45,100) experienced three or more incidents.

Threatened assault

An estimated 2.5% of persons in New South Wales (157,800) experienced threatened assault during the 2017–18 reference period, including:
  • 2.3% (142,400) who experienced face-to-face threatened assault
  • 0.9% (53,800) who experienced non face-to-face threatened assault.

One-third of persons who experienced threatened assault in New South Wales (33% or 52,700) experienced a single incident, and just under half experienced three or more incidents (47% or 74,000).

Of those who experienced face-to-face threatened assault:
  • approximately one-third (34% or 48,200) had their most recent incident reported to police
  • over half (55% or 75,400) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to their most recent incident.

Break-in and attempted break-in

During the 2017-18 reference period approximately 2.0% of households in New South Wales (59,900) experienced a break-in. Of these, 69% (41,300) had the most recent incident reported to police. The break-in victimisation rate was lower than the national rate (2.5%).

During the same time period, 1.7% of households in New South Wales (48,500) experienced an attempted break-in. The attempted break-in victimisation rate was lower than the national rate (2.2%).

Theft from motor vehicle

An estimated 2.6% of households in New South Wales (76,000) experienced theft from a motor vehicle. Of these, 48% (36,600) had the most recent incident reported to police.

Malicious property damage

In New South Wales, an estimated 4.6% of households (133,300) experienced malicious property damage. Of these, 47% (63,100) had the most recent incident reported to police.
